Suggested Packing List

Clothing & Personal Items

To help you stay warm, dry, and comfortable on the river, we recommend packing the following:

  • Shoes suitable for canoeing, plus a separate pair for camp
    • No jandals / thongs / flip flops for this trip
  • Track suit or poly-pro pants
  • 2–3 x polypropylene or woollen tops
  • Spare lightweight top
  • Sun hat
  • Waterproof lightweight jacket or parka
  • Sunglasses
  • Insect repellent & sunscreen (preferably water-resistant SPF 50+)
  • Swimwear
  • Complete change of warm clothes
  • Shorts
  • Towel

Sleeping & Camp Gear

  • Sleeping bag & sleeping mat
  • Tent (optional — but recommended even if staying in huts/lodges)
  • Torch / batteries / headlamp
  • Pots, pans & eating utensils
  • Can opener
  • Dishwashing material (biodegradable) & tea towels
  • Matches or lighter + gas cooker

Food & Water

  • Reusable water bottle
  • Enough food for the whole trip plus one extra day
  • Snacks and nibbles for between meals

Other Essentials

  • Spare bags (for clothing and rubbish)
  • Toilet paper
  • EPIRB or GPS communicator (if possible)
    • Available for hire from any i-SITE in New Zealand

Water on the River (Important)

There are rainwater tanks at every DOC campsite, approximately every two hours along the river.
DOC advises that you boil or filter this water before drinking. It’s also good outdoor practice to carry plenty of water with you each day.
