The Whanganui River Journey is a unique part of Te Araroa where hikers swap boots for paddles and travel deep into the remote wilderness of Whanganui National Park. Paddle through towering native forest, dramatic river gorges, historic settlements, waterfalls, and the famous Bridge to Nowhere while continuing south on your Te Araroa journey.

After a full safety briefing and paddling instruction session, you begin your self-guided canoe journey toward Whanganui.

The River Journey

The Whanganui River section typically takes around 5 days and offers Te Araroa hikers a completely different pace of travel through one of New Zealand’s most culturally and naturally significant landscapes.

Peak Season 1st October to 30th April

Huts – Adults $35 per person per night, under 17 years of age – $18.
Campsites – $19 per person per night, under 17 years of age – $9.
