Canoe Trips Down the Whanganui River

Heard of Great Walks NZ?

The Great Walks programme has been going for over 20 years and is a Department of Conversation (DOC) initiative and involves now 11 Walks or Journeys throughout New Zealand.

The tracks and journeys are premier tracks that pass through diverse and spectacular scenery. From some of our native forests, lakes and rivers to rugged mountain peaks, deep gorges and vast valleys. The tracks are well constructed and are easy to follow.

Below are 2 links that might be of interest. The first is the Great Walks website put together by DOC and the second is the Map with all of the Great Walks around New Zealand.

These trails and journeys are recognised as premier multi-day routes that take hikers and adventurers through pristine native forests, alpine passes, rugged coastlines, and extraordinary river valleys. The network includes a selection of well-formed tracks and routes designed to be accessible yet inspiring. Typically taking between 3 and 5 days to complete with overnight stays at designated huts or campsites booked through DOC.

Unlike the traditional walking routes on the Great Walks list, the Whanganui Journey — one of the country’s official Great Walk experiences — is unique in that it is a river adventure rather than a foot trail. Instead of hiking on land, participants paddle canoe or kayak down the legendary Whanganui River through deep gorges, lush native bush, and culturally significant landscapes. This extraordinary trip combines rich natural scenery with a deep sense of history and immersion in the heart of the North Island’s wilderness.

Whether you’re seeking world-class hiking, tranquil river paddling, or a blend of cultural and natural discovery, New Zealand’s Great Walks programme offers something unforgettable for every outdoor enthusiast.
